In societies haunted by seemingly providential preventive warnings and labels, this album should come with a cover admonition: “Warning! Testicular trumpet playing can affect all those with a weak heart for well-executed music, especially Kenny G fans. Please consult your physician before buying this album.” Well, on the other hand, do not think for a minute that Sandoval's work can be subsumed into ballsy, brawny, cojonudo, flights of unparalleled blowing. After all, no one can be described as the “Best trumpet player in the world,” by just hitting notes hard, fast, and continuously. Don Sandoval can be as expressive and/or introspective as anyone can be, in any context whatsoever. This time, Arturo offers us quite a redolent mosaic of big sounding arrangements and performances by quite a bunch of excellent musicians, known and not so known, as well as the mandatory guests, such as none other than the equally mandatory Mr. Tito Puente as player and theme of one of the compositions.
Although the road taken in this recording is quite predictable, its execution and quality of sound is impeccable, with quite a bit of fun and danceable spirits through it all. One last thing, please, do us all a favor and let people sing in their own original languages, unless of course, they have the ability to sing in other idioms...
