Scott/Grant 5: Horizon Song
ByThe first of Grant's two originals is "In This Time." Following the theme statement, Swainson's solo shows that he is a sturdy and supple player and provides a solid foundation through the remainder of the chart supporting Grant's passages. The other piece, "A Tune For Joel," is a subdued affair which again showcases Swainson's versatility, fluidity and tonal quality. Pianist Tosoff delivers a solo filled with unhurried grace.
"Punctuality" offers a swinging change of pace, with Scott and Grant showing keen insight and fleet technique. Clarke propels the music forward with a subtle, unobtrusive drive. It is evident as the album unfolds that Scott and Grant can navigate complex rhythms and intricate melodies with a light touch, and the complete ensemble has an effortless fluidity in their playing. The final track, "Eight Across ( For Tim and Lyla)," completes this serene musical journey. The number is filled with harmony and clarity as Scott and Grant deliver approachable, soothing, and refreshing pathways.
