Billy Martin's Wicked Knee: Heels over Head

Fondato dal batterista co-leader dei Medeski, Martin & Wood, Billy Martin, Wicked Knee è un assortito quartetto che ha pubblicato da poco Heels over Head, un album ricco di ritmo, nato - come espressamente dichiarato da Billy Martin - per intrattenere ascoltatori capaci di lasciarsi andare al divertimento.

In netta antitesi alla musica cervellotica di alcune avanguardie, quella proposta dalla band americana contempla contaminazioni reggae, rap, ska e si rifà alla musica tradizionale d'oltreoceano, non solo statunitense (ne sia un esempio la rivisitazione della messicana "Cielito Lindo," riproposta qui col titolo di "Canta y no Llores").

I tempi regolari, le pulsioni ritmiche vivaci e le colorite interpretazioni degli ottoni in front-line danno il meglio in up-tempo come "Button to Button," dove l'approccio "hardcore" della tuba di Rojas - che sostituisce in formazione il classico basso a corde - e del drumming di Martin esalta la tensione della melodia, o "Muffaletta" in cui i due solisti si alternano alla guida del brano su un incedere funky estremamente orecchiabile.

Non mancano qua e là nell'album alcuni episodi introspettivi: fra i più interessanti "Chaman's Interlude" e "Noctiluca": melodie tenebrose che permettono di apprezzare in particolare le belle poliritmie di Billy Martin, e che tuttavia sembrano intermezzi musicali non completamente coerenti rispetto ai contenuti dell'album.

Da non dimenticare infine la collaborazione di Wicked Knee con la cantante newyorkese Shelley Hirsch in "99%": un brano lento e caracollante di non facile interpretazione canora, dove è brava la vocalist a dialogare con gli ottoni su una melodia piena di riferimenti blues.
