Track review of "The Man Who Waved At Trains"

Soft Machine: Floating World Live
Keyboardist Mike Ratledge's "The Man Who Waved at Trains" emerges as a highlight from Soft Machine's 2025 remastered album Floating World Live, representing a crucial period in the Canterbury legends' evolution during their pivotal era with guitar great Allan Holdsworth . Moreover, Drop (MoonJune, 2025), drawn from a 1971 concert, also receives the remastered treatment for 2025.

"The Man Who Waved at Trains" highlights Soft Machine at their most reflective, weaving together Ratledge and Karl Jenkins' hypnotic keyboard work in a piece that feels both melancholic and mysteriously uplifting. Bassist Roy Babbington establishes the melody early on, while the composition builds with characteristic Canterbury Scene patience, allowing each instrumental voice to emerge organically from the ensemble's collective improvisational consciousness.

Holdsworth, switching to violin, executes somber and sinuous passages that float over the rhythm section's subtle complexity, creating an evocative soundscape that perfectly captures the wistful imagery of its title amid drummer John Marshall's zesty support. The band unites with contrasting and harmonious unison lines, raising the pitch with hard-hitting rigor via the soloists' deft improvisational tactics.

At its heart lies an entrancing melody that exemplifies why this piece has become a Soft Machine favorite among fans and critics alike. The composition may draw listeners into its meditative mood while maintaining an accessible melodic core that remains memorable long after the final notes fade. The track's ethereal ambiance builds tension through layered improvisations, blending technical virtuosity with emotional depth.

Originally taken from Bundles (Harvest 1975), this exceptional piece benefits from MoonJune recording artist guitarist Mark Wingfield's restoration effort. The sonic improvements emphasize clarity and spatial separation, allowing the arrangements to breathe more naturally within the mix like a sonic spring cleaning. However, determining precise enhancement over the previous iteration remains challenging without direct comparison systems.
