Daniele Cavallanti & The Brotherhood Creative Trance Music Ensemble: Faces and Tales

Chapeau! a Daniele Cavallanti, sassofonista e compositore di lungo corso che vanta ormai una carriera ultraquarantennale e che è noto nell'ambiente per il suo approccio ecumenico alla materia sotto le bandiere e le sigle più diverse: Democratic Orchestra Milano, Nexus, Italian Instabile Orchestra, Jazz Chromatic Ensemble, Black Hole Quartet, solo per citare i "gruppi" e non sono comunque tutti. Questo Faces and Tales firmato dall'ennesimo collettivo, The Brotherhood Creative Trance Music Ensemble, è davvero un monumento all'energia e alla creatività delle grandi formazioni composite che hanno fatto grande il jazz.

Oltre a omaggiare Duke Ellington con il brano "African Power," Cavallanti, dà qui però dimostrazione di una maestria di compositore e di arrangiatore fuori dal comune. Se da una parte, le sue creazioni sono un concentrato di mille influenze, dalla Scuola di Chicago a John Coltrane, dalla Brotherhood of Breath di Chris McGregor a Don Cherry, dall'altra, non sono mai un prodotto derivativo. Il miglior esempio di questa sua arte, come scrive anche Claudio Sessa, autore delle note di copertina di questo doppio album registrato interamente dal vivo nel maggio 2012 durante l'Ah Um Jazz Festival di Milano, è "Faces," caleidoscopica suite colma di colori, timbri, idee, improvvisazioni e visioni che lasciano letteralmente a bocca aperta.

Ma tutto il CD è degno di nota: dalla tippettiana "Creative Mesa" (con il brillante Fabrizio Puglisi al piano, artista che meriterebbe più audience) a un'altra prova gigante della raccolta, la raffinata e cangiante "Traces Minutes" (dove spicca un bell'assolo lunare di Luca Calabrese); un brano che mette in luce la solidità e la "chimica" di un ensemble, 10 elementi compreso Cavallanti, che raccoglie se non il meglio del jazz nostrano, una buona parte delle sue varie generazioni: dai "veterani" Gianluigi Trovesi, Tiziano Tononi e Carlo Actis Dato agli "emergenti" Silvia Bolognesi ed Emanuele Parrini.

Che dire ancora, Faces and Tales è, senza voler esagerare, da acquistare a scatola a chiusa. Anche perché è un lavoro capace di mettere d'accordo tradizionalisti e modernisti. E, di questi tempi, non è poco.
