Pierre-Francois Massy: Enfin seul

Intima performance virtuosistica su uno strumento tanto ostico, quanto affascinante come il contrabbasso, questo album del musicista svizzero Pierre-Francois Massy è il frutto di una registrazione effettuata dal vivo nel corso del festival di musica improvvisata di Losanna, nell'agosto del 2002, all'interno della locale chiesa di Saint-Laurent. L'album, dalle atmosfere molto composte ed equilibrate, vede il contrabbassista eseguire perlopiu' improvvisazione su piccoli spunti di propria creazione, solo occasionalmente impegnato all'archetto ("Arco bruto", "Arco lirico", "Arco ponticello"). Tre le composizioni non originali, tutte evidenti "omaggi", figurano "Deux sans trois", di Malherbe, "Serenade de la 5e suite", di Bach, e la conclusiva "Silence", di Charlie Haden.

L'omaggio al maestro di tanti contrabbassisti dell'universo jazzistico è particolarmente appropriato; non tanto perché Massy mostri un debito diretto nei confronti del grande bassista statunitense - il suo è un suono originale, tra il classico e il jazzistico, e Haden è solo uno dei riferimenti percepibili -, quanto perché tutto il suo album è un attento dosaggio delle calde sonorità del contrabbasso con i rumori scheggiati che è possibile produrre con un suo impiego creativo e con ampi silenzi, all'interno dei quali rimbombano le eco dello strumento.

È all'interno di questa poetica espressiva che va letto il contesto del lavoro in solo, un'improvvisazione quasi continua - molta ve ne è anche nella rilettura della stessa suite bachiana - nella quale il tono soffuso e meditativo contrasta con il vigore del suono. Massy si mostra sicuro padrone dello strumento, ma soprattutto efficace comunicatore, tirando fuori tre quarti d'ora di musica che dal vivo dev'essere stata splendida e qui, sul più "freddo" supporto registrato, conserva numerose suggestioni ed una piacevolezza che reca in dono non solo al cultore dello strumento, ma anche all'ascoltatore appassionato ed attento.
