Andy Biskin Quartet: Early American: The Melodies of Stephen Foster

Clarinettista atipico, assai poco assimilabile ad altri illustri conterranei come Don Byron o Chris Speed per citarne alcuni, Andy Biskin si colloca in una sorta di terra di nessuno, un piede nel cosiddetto jazz creativo e l’altro nel solco di tutto ciò che è tradizione storia, cultura e radici americane.

Con questo Early American - The Melodies of Stephen Foster, Biskin rende omaggio ad un autore tanto sfortunato, morì negli stenti a soli 36 anni, quanto fondamentale nella formazione di una chiara identità musicale nordamericana, compositore tra l’altro della celeberrima “Oh! Susanna“.

Il risultato è assolutamente gradevole, fresco e spontaneo, un divertissement giocato sull’intelligenza e sulla bravura dei musicisti. Biskin rimanda ai grandi clarinettisti di New Orleans ma palesa un linguaggio di assoluta modernità; McCann sia alla chitarra che al banjo funge da simpatico guastatore sonoro introducendo dissonanze e glissandi originali; Washburne fornisce la memoria storica con i suoni gravi e grevi di tuba e trombone; Hollenbeck irradia colori e fantasia con tamburi e metalli della sua batteria.

Ed anche le composizioni di Biskin si integrano perfettamente nell’humus storico-musicale dell’autore omaggiato, contribuendo a completare il racconto di una storia rilevante.
