Rich Halley 4: Dusk And Dawn
ByFrom the opening track, "Spherical Aberration," the rich sonic landscape envelops listeners. Halley and heralded trombonist Michael Vlatkovich's punchy unison lines, like a pair of jazz-infused cannons, blast through the rhythmic foundation, setting the stage for a fiery solo battle between the hornists. The music descends into a maelstrom of potent improv, with drummer Carson Halley's polyrhythmic pulse driving the ensemble forward like a super- charged locomotive. As the trombonist sweetens the pot during the bridge, the music takes on a more soulful hue. The drummer struts his stuff with an expanded Latin groove, adding a touch of spice to the proceedings. Halley's compositions are anything but stagnant, with a myriad of mini motifs woven into the grand tapestry.
"Retrograde" features striking shifts in harmony and Halley's tenor saxophone work, conveying both introspection and exuberance. The band launches into another off-metered funk vamp, highlighted by Halley's brawny yet fluent soloing. On "After Dawn" the band's performance signals a cautionary tale as they vary the pitch and could be driving slowly through a thunderstorm, switching to the hornists' plaintive cries during the closeout.
"Spatter" is launched with hefty call-and-response passages by the trombonist and drummer. The band picks up steam, led by Halley's burly tonal presence and resonating lines, contrasted by Vlatkovich. Here, the band gradually soars through the atmosphere with bending deviations and a flock of dips and spikes that reformulate the primary theme continually.
Throughout the album, the rhythm section of bassist Clyde Reed and drummer Carson Halley provide a rock-solid foundation, allowing the music to ebb and flow organically. Their chemistry is profound, driving the improvisational sections while maintaining a sense of structure.
One of the album's standout features is its thematic cohesiveness. Each piece transitions seamlessly into the next, creating an immersive experience that invites deep listening. Halley's thoughtful arrangements and the ensemble's tight execution reveal new layers with each listen.
Dusk and Dawn presents a stimulating journey through the nuances of time and emotion. This work not only highlights Halley's prowess as a composer and saxophonist but also displays the extraordinary talent of the ensemble. It is a must-listen for those who appreciate the art of jazz in its most dynamic form.
