Matthew Shipp with Mat Maneri & Joe Morris: Duos
L'album appare quindi del tutto coeso, entità definita e omogenea che esalta l'arte del duo di tre splendidi improvvisatori/innovatori. Shipp ha un approccio alla tastiera globale, sa essere percussivo, infarcito di cluster e di attacchi violenti così come gentile, delicato, rarefatto contiguo ad una visione accademica e contemporanea. La sua scrittura è uno splendido connubio di rigore e forme architettoniche compiute con aperture angolari nelle quali il momento improvvisativo si apre a prospettive inedite.
Joe Morris fa parte di quella schiera di chitarristi (Derek Bailey su tutti) che hanno rivoluzionato lo stile della sei corde. Il suo fraseggio basato principalmente sulle singole note, con ampio uso dello spazio, il timbro caldo e chiaro, l'adesione all'estetica microtonale (variando la pressione sulle corde riesce a creare delle minime variazioni di tono) ne fanno uno dei chitarristi più originali in circolazione. Mat Maneri, figlio di Joe vera e propria leggenda nella comunità dei musicisti dell'area free e avantgarde, teorico proprio del sistema microtonale, è grande specialista del violino e di una serie di suoi derivati. Il dialogo con il piano di Shipp raggiunge livelli di eccellenza, passando da momenti di ricchezza espressiva quasi orchestrale a distillati di note, suoni quasi impercettibili che si insinuano tra le trame armoniche del pianista.
