Eri Yamamoto: Duologue

La pianista giapponese (ma residente a New York da tredici anni) Eri Yamamoto (clicca qui per leggere l’intervista che le abbiamo fatto) è ormai una realtà che si sta imponendo all’attenzione degli appassionati, grazie anche alle sue frequenti collaborazioni con William Parker e Hamid Drake, i quali le sono accanto in alcune tracce di questo disco per il quale ha scelto di presentarsi in otto duetti con artisti e strumenti diversi.

Il lavoro include tutte composizioni originali, scritte dalla pianista appositamente per il compagno di turno. E lo si sente bene ascoltando ad esempio la splendida “Subway Song”, nella quale compare Parker e che da un lato gode di una grande libertà, dall’altro è caratterizzata da una prepotente impronta monkiana, la quale permette alla Yamamoto di mostrare la sua sorprendente capacità percussiva. Il confronto poi con brani come “Violet Sky”, giustamente lirico per adattarsi al tenore di Daniel Carter ma al tempo stesso caratterizzato da una ritmica percussività della tastiera, o come l’eccellente “Thank You”, nel quale il duetto è con la batteria di Federico Ughi, mostrano l’ecletticità compositiva della pianista, la quale, comunque, presenta un caratteristico stile minimale, percussivo, che diventa talora persino ipnotico, come nella traccia forse più impressionante - “Cicular Movement”, assieme ad Hamid Drake - nella quale le microvariazioni improvvisate conservano un’adesione a un percorso dalla coerenza quasi ossessiva.

Ma ciò che rende veramente importante questo lavoro è il modo in cui la Yamamoto è capace di intraprendere un autentico dialogo improvvisato con i suoi partner, a prescindere dallo strumento che suonano. Una qualità importante che, unita alle sue qualità strumentali e compositive, consente di scommettere sul futuro di questa giovane pianista.
