Vikter Duplaix: DJ Kicks
Appearing on the album cover wearing a multicolored headwrap, dark shades and a pimped-out furry coat that would send animal activists scurrying for their petitions, Vikter Duplaix cuts an enigmatic, imposing figure. His eclectic wardrobe is one indication of the man’s musical style. Duplaix is both producer and DJ and has worked with neo-soul luminaries such as Erykah Badu, Eric Benet and Musiq Soulchild. Additionally, he is one half of deep house outfit Scuba that he formed with King Britt. His DJ Kicks mix combines all the elements of Duplaix’s personality. He begins with some broken beat/nu-jazz flavor from Taurus, and pioneers 4hero, transitioning into ethereal house from the likes of Herbert, Waiwan and Osunlade. His own track "Sensuality" sees Duplaix flexing his honey tones in suitably steamy way over a jazzy, syncopated beat. The futuristic spoken word piece, "Transition" aptly provides a bridge over which Duplaix strolls with a refined swagger. He then lays down a series of melodic hip-hop from De La Soul, fellow Philly–head Bahamadia, before working some Erykah Badu into the mix. In short Duplaix has covered more ground on one mix CD than an oiled penguin on ice. He pulls together different musical elements with the same abandon with which he puts together his outfits. And it works. Soulful, jazzy and groovy, you’ll get your kicks out of this one.
