Peter Sommer: Crossroads

Per l´esordio da leader il sassofonista tenore Peter Sommer non ha scelto la strada più facile, andando a chiamare a completare il gruppo il collega Rich Perry, a lungo nella big band di Tad Jones/Mel Lewis ed in quella di Maria Schmeider. Un incontro quello dei due sassofoni tenori, che ha illustri precedenti nel passato e che si muove sulla strada di un mainstream fatto con cura e comunque ben radicato nel passato.

Nessuna novità, quindi: si tratta di un lavoro onesto, in cui si susseguono assoli tenuti con la dovuta concentrazione, più angolare Sommer, più fluido Perry, di cui si intuisce l´esperienza, accompagnati da una ritmica che fa egregiamente il proprio lavoro e che fa da collante facendo sembrare il tutto omogeneo e compatto. Nessuna sfida dei due sassofonisti, ma uno stare attenti agli arrangiamenti ed all´atmosfera dei brani presentati. Questi sono stati scelti con cura, due di Sommer, qualche standard famoso ed i primi tre brani ripescati da autori come Kenny Dorham, Bud Powell, Wayne Shorter.

Jazz fatto con cura, niente di più e niente di meno, il cui valore viene fuori quando lo si paragona con chi cerca di fare dischi simili: queto almeno è riuscito col buco, come le famose ciambelle.
