Ben Allison: Cowboy Justice

Il contrabbassista e compositore Ben Allison rientra in quella pattuglia di nuovi jazzmen che amano confrontarsi con moduli espressivi plurali, insofferenti di griglie imposte, tanto più di connotazioni ideologiche.

Non che questo voglia dire disimpegno sociale, tutt’altro.

Anzi, Allison insieme ad altri ottimi musicisti coordina da anni i lavori del Jazz Composers Collective, egregio esempio cooperativo di creatività e didattica.

Questo nuovo Cowboy Justice cambia sostanzialmente i contenuti e il formato della musica di Allison, che sceglie un quartetto anomalo con tromba, chitarra elettrica e batteria, per partiture sobrie, votate alla melodia come elemento principale delle composizioni, tutte comprese tra i tre e i sei minuti di durata.

Un esempio illuminante di musica semplice realizzata da musicisti complessi.

Alcune tracce sono ispirate da mood ispanici (“Tricky Dick”, “Talking Heads”), altre si sviluppano in tempi ternari che sostengono temi crepuscolari, malinconici (“Weazy”, la splendida “Ruby’s Roundabout”).

Nessuna concessione alla routine, comunque, anzi una felicità compositiva sempre fresca, seppur lontana dal jazz pulsante cui Allison ci aveva abituati in passato.

L’intelaiatura armonica è curata in particolare dalla chitarra di Steve Cardenas, mentre a livello solistico Cowboy Justice è una vetrina preziosa per la tromba di Ron Horton, un solista che è tempo di valutare per quello che è: un gigante.

Articolazione agile e sapiente, un suono cristallino, una capacità di affrontare qualsiasi costruzione sonora. Davanti ad un blindfold test si potrebbe scambiare Horton per Dave Douglas, ma solo con un ascolto superficiale.

Dal canto suo, Allison non prevarica nemmeno per un attimo, interessato soltanto al buon equilibrio della musica e alla riuscita del sound d’insieme.
