Partiamo da "Aware of Vacuity," il lungo brano di Jim Hobbs - sassofonista nella Fully Celebrated Orchestra e nel sestetto di Taylor Ho Bynum - che potrebbe portare la firma di Jim Pepper o Don Cherry o di un qualche compositore di origine balcanica. La melodia semplice semplice, quasi una ninna nanna ipnotica viene prima aggirata e poi blandita, per poi trasformarsi in stimolante fonte di ispirazione. Soluzioni mai scontate, imprevedibili strategie timbriche, aprono nuovi orizzonti alla composizione senza mai spezzare definitivamente i legami originari.

È questo l'approccio che i tre superbi improvvisatori utilizzano in Continuum (2012) - album che bissa il debutto omonimo su Rogue Art - lavoro costruito attorno a pochi elementi di base, spesso solo frammenti o poco più che ipotesi di suono e di ritmo. E quando viene meno la presenza forte di una melodia - la citata "Aware of Vacuity" - o di una struttura - la boppistica "Jamila" - l'inventiva, la padronanza strumentale messa la servizio della creatività prendono il sopravvento e consentono alla musica di decollare.
