Caelan Cardello: Chapter One
Caelan Cardello's debut release, Chapter One, marks the emergence of a pianist and composer with a clear sense of purpose. Supporting Cardello on this journey are bassist Jonathon Muir-Cotton, drummer Dominick "Domo" Branch, and guest tenor saxophonist Chris Lewis; they draw deeply from the well of jazz tradition while shaping a distinctly modern voice. Cardello's program combines eight originals with select pieces from Cole Porter, Harold Mabern, and Cedar Walton, establishing a strong foundation in both heritage and innovation.

Harold Mabern was a mentor to Cardello and is the composer of "John Neely." It is the first of three tracks featuring tenor saxophonist Chris Lewis, adding a compelling voice to the ensemble. In this lively yet melodic groove, Cardello and the powerful rhythm section tear through the arrangement, providing seamless cohesion to Lewis's fluid improvisations. Moving to another composition from a jazz legend, Cedar Walton's "Groundwork" is a hard-bop tune typically performed with horns and a tight ensemble. By contrast, Cardello's trio version is more streamlined: no horns, with the piano taking the lead in the melody and almost all the solo space. The tune remains hard-swinging with bluesy runs and bebop-inspired lines. Branch drives the piece's momentum with both power and finesse. In his solo, his playing is brisk and straightforward, using tight, clear ideas. Throughout, Muir- Cotton remains the steady anchor of the chart.

The title "Solidarity" implies unity and mutual support. The Latin groove is upbeat and sunny, giving the track an optimistic feel. Lewis and Cardello are locked in, weaving melodies over Branch's and Muir-Cotton's insistent rhythm. Each musician actively bolsters the other's ideas and communicates the theme through spirited, unified interplay. The closing track, "Music For The People," serves as both a mission statement and a promise. Built as a soulful blues, it still has an optimistic spirit and underscores Cardello's belief in jazz as a living, communal art form. Supported by the rhythmic figures played together by Branch and Muir-Cotton, Cardello's clarity of touch, combined with melodic sensibility, suggests an artist poised to make a lasting mark.
