Massimo Colombo: Caravaggio

Ci sono alcuni aspetti che colpiscono immediatamente nell'approccio a questo CD: innanzitutto la bellissima foto di copertina, realizzata da due giovani registi, che fanno incontrare, in una suggestiva composizione, Caravaggio e Francis Bacon.

Poi la presenza di due alfieri della fusion, come Jeff Berlin e Billy Cobham, nella più classica delle formazioni jazzistiche, il piano trio per l'appunto, cui si aggiunge quella altrettanto insolita di Miroslav Vitous, alle prese con la consolle di registrazione e di mixaggio.

Infine la musica, interamente composta da Colombo, che sgorga fresca e limpida, sempre in equilibrio tra scrittura e improvvisazione, senza ardite soluzioni ma capace di scavare in profondità tra le pieghe dei brani. E in primo piano l'empatia tra i musicisti: Billy Cobham, lontano anni luce dal drumming muscolare dei suoi progetti, sorprende per la delicatezza e la sensibilità con la quale tratta pelli e metalli della sua batteria. Jeff Berlin mette la voce pastosa del suo basso elettrico al servizio del sound del trio, evitando facili esibizionismi strumentali.

A trarne chiaro vantaggio è il pianismo di Colombo, fluido e leggero, in perfetta sintonia con il tappeto ritmico e timbrico creato dai partner, in una ideale sintesi tra acustico ed elettrico. Tra i brani da segnalare "L'ombra parlante", splendida esecuzione dagli echi jarrettiani, "Caravaggio" dall'introduzione sbarazzina smentita da un improvviso cambio di registro, ed un intenso lavoro del pianoforte, "Para Monk" dall'andatura leggermente sbilenca sostenuta da un serrato interplay, e "Da umori a timori", caratterizzata da continui cambi di groove tra rilassatezza e gioiosa vitalità.
