Il nome del gruppo rispecchia paradigmaticamente gli intenti di questo CD. Tra omaggi a politici e jazzisti, le otto tracce proposte celebrano in chiave modern mainstream la composita cultura afroamericana del Novecento. Orientati sul versante postboppistico, gli assoli brillano per fluidità di fraseggio e tecnica sopraffina, riscattando ampiamente la rigidità del canone. Si impongono esposizioni avvincenti e soluzioni stilisticamente enciclopediche, grazie a musicisti di grande personalità.

Sul piano dell'architettura musicale si avverte l'affettuoso rimando alla più recente produzione discografica di Tom Harrell, nel cui quintetto Wayne Escoffery è una colonna portante. Ma soprattutto nell'unico brano live, la rilevanza compositiva e performativa è tale da rendere ammaliante l'ascolto di un disco impregnato di aureo classicismo.

Superbamente eseguite, le composizioni originali brillano anche per la presenza di intense ballad, venate di struggente nostalgia. Risulta assai convincente l'approccio contemporaneo allo swing, grazie alla capacità del sestetto di rivitalizzare la tradizione con gusto e intima adesione al modello.
