Bassdrumbone, Kim Cass & Ivo Perelman

Ever heard of "fartlek"? It's a method of training for runners where they can play around with their speeds, very unstructured. That's sort of what this episode of One Man's Jazz turned out to be—all over the place in terms of style, tempos, musical variations and origins in the albums debuting. For instance, the Southeast Asian scene hits with a couple of freewheeling, open live sets with Philippines-based Rick Countryman, bassist Richard Alan Bates from Malaysia, and Japanese legend drummer Sabu Toyozumi. Guitarist Jessica Ackerley now making waves on the scene; there's music from a live set from 2019's FreeJazz Saar Festival by Germans Frank Paul Schubert (saxophone), Stefan Scheib (bass) and Klaus Kugel (drums) and the late and great bass clarinetist Michel Pilz. Two prominent English free-blowing saxophonists—Ron Caines and Martin Archer—hook up with their band Axis;, another recording in the Gauci Music Live at Scholes Street Studio series presents Open Question, featuring Daniel Carter. Bassist Kim Cass' new Levs with Matt Mitchell and Tyshawn Sorey will find its way onto best-of lists, and don't be surprised if Ephemeral Shapes by the prolific saxophonist Ivo Perelman with Aruán Ortiz on piano}} and Ramón López on drums also appears on some of those lists. Topping all of that off is music from a trio celebrating its 47 years of making uncompromised music—BassDrumBoneMark Helias, Gerry Hemingway and Ray Anderson.
