William Parker - Hamid Drake: First Communion + Piercing The Veil / Summer Snow

Read "First Communion + Piercing The Veil / Summer Snow" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

William Parker's Raining On The Moon Bimhuis Amsterdam April 27, 2007

A beautiful Friday evening in Amsterdam drew to a close with William Parker's Raining On The Moon taking the stage in the fading light at the Bimhuis. Parker is the pre-eminent free jazz bassist on the New York downtown scene and should need no introduction to AAJ readers. The group comprises Parker's Quartet with longtime associates Hamid Drake on drums and frame drum, ...

William Parker and Hamid Drake: Summer Snow, volume 2

Read "Summer Snow, volume 2" reviewed by Lyn Horton

The mere juxtaposition of the words summer and snow present a paradox infiltrated with energy. To move from the idea of one word to the other in itself requires a conscious shift in imagination. To invest meaning into the metaphor requires openness and belief in its potential dynamic. The duo of William Parker and Hamid Drake forges a bond that bolsters that dynamic in another release of their duo sessions called Summer Snow. When the two play, their sound is ...

William Parker & Hamid Drake: Summer Snow

Read "Summer Snow" reviewed by Troy Collins

Summer Snow is the second studio recording from the adroit rhythm team of bassist William Parker and percussionist Hamid Drake. Their first duo recording, the poly-ethnic exploration Piercing the Veil (AUM Fidelity, 2001), was recently reissued together with the previously unreleased live concert recording First Communion. This sequel finds the telepathic pair delving even deeper into indigenous cultural traditions for inspiration.

Parker and Drake expand further on the pan-global experiments of Don Cherry, Codona and the Art Ensemble ...

Other Dimensions in Music at the JVC Jazz Festival in Paris, Oct. 19-20

Read "Other Dimensions in Music at the JVC Jazz Festival in Paris, Oct. 19-20" reviewed by John Sharpe

The Missing Link. That was the title of a 1990s Fred Anderson session, but it could be applied with even greater veracity to the NYC collective Other Dimensions in Music, for this tour encompassing the talents of William Parker, Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter and Hamid Drake, subbing for regular drummer Rashid Bakr.

The quartet members have been together since the early 1980s, playing as and when their increasingly busy schedules allow. Their credo, like the AACM's Great Black Music: Ancient ...

William Parker Bass Quartet featuring Charles Gayle: Requiem

Read "Requiem" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff
