Dominic Miller: 5th House

Read "5th House" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

Vlada: All About You

Read "All About You" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

Herbie Hancock: River: The Joni Letters

Read "River: The Joni Letters" reviewed by George Kanzler

The participation of such former and present Grammy nominees and winners as Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Corinne Bailey Rae, Luciana Souza and Leonard Cohen (reading “The Jungle Line" like a beat poet), as well as the iconic stature of Joni Mitchell herself, may have immeasurably helped in winning this CD the Grammy Album of the Year award. But that doesn't diminish the significance of it being the first jazz album to win the award in forty-three years. For make no ...

Herbie Hancock: River: The Joni Letters

Read "River: The Joni Letters" reviewed by John Kelman

While it might be easy, on the surface, to view pianist Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters as a continuation of Possibilities (Hear, 2005), nothing could be further from the truth. Possibilities was an unapologetically pop record; River is unequivocally jazz--although such broad classifications shouldn't matter. River is, quite simply, a superb disc that takes Joni Mitchell's extant jazz proclivities and gives them an even greater interpretive boost. The majority of River is culled from Mitchell's “classic" songwriting ...

Paul Anka: Rock Swings

Read "Rock Swings" reviewed by Chris M. Slawecki

Pop music sure has changed since Paul Anka last helped rule the airways (as composer or performer) with such mainstays as “My Way, “Diana, “She's A Lady, and “Puppy Love.Decades later, Anka's own notes explain the Rock Swings! concept: “We all embraced the idea: to find songs from a diverse group of musicians, from Nirvana and Van Halen, to Lionel Richie and The Pet Shop Boys, and reinvent them in an entirely unique way: Swing! The result, a ...

Vinnie Colaiuta/Robben Ford/Jimmy Haslip: Jing Chi

Read "Jing Chi" reviewed by Todd S. Jenkins

Another Tone Center supergroup strikes gold. Ex-Zappa drummer Colaiuta joins Yellowjackets bassist Haslip and blues-jazz guitar god Ford for a pretty damned satisfactory fusion foray. The big ears and fleet fingers required to pull off music like this are present in spades, and Ford's pedigree revives the blues feeling that's been so often absent in jazz-rock outings.

This is actually a fairly relaxed set compared to some of the barn-burners Tone Center has released of late. The impression is that ...

Vinnie Colaiuta - Robben Ford - Jimmy Haslip: Jing Chi

Read "Jing Chi" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Guitarist Robben Ford has established a successful solo career; bassist Jimmy Haslip gained notoriety with the Yellowjackets; and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta is perhaps one of the most called upon session artists in the business. One might have high expectations for this joint production, yet not much happens until we get to the piece titled “Going Nowhere."

A few of these works may rekindle notions of the late '60s power trio Cream, thanks to Ford's velvety blues licks, staccato-like crunch chords, ...
