Tobias Gebb & Trio West: An Upper West Side Story

Read "An Upper West Side Story" reviewed by Michael P. Gladstone

Showing that its debut album Trio West Plays Holiday Songs (Yummy House, 2007) was no fluke, leader Tobias Gebb begins this album with a direct homage to Ahmad Jamal on his medley of “Poinciana/What Time Is It?" Not only does pianist Eldad Zvulun employ Jamal's idiosyncratic use of spacing but drummer Gebb is all a-chatter with Vernell Fournier-like flourishes, notably at the start and finish of this tune but also throughout the presentation. Zvulun is given another chance to shine ...

Trio West: Trio West Plays Holiday Songs

It isn't every new release that provides nostalgia without even playing it. Trio West's record label, Yummy House, is an exact look-alike of Columbia vinyl releases circa 1960. Without having the actual Columbia logo, this album has the same distinctive red, white and black label with the Columbia “stereo arrow" displayed. I felt like I was back in 1960 watching the platters spin and listening to The Kirby Stone Four or Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Although the group has ...

Trio West: Trio West Plays Holiday Songs

Leader Tobias Gebb, born and raised on the west side of Manhattan, pays homage, with his trio, to home and family on this traditional holiday album. Since 1995, Trio West has found reason to carry a straight-ahead jazz message to its New York audience year-round, with a mix of the new and of the old. Recalling the heartfelt and easy-on-the-ears musical good fortune of The Modern Jazz Quartet's John Lewis, Ahmad Jamal and Vince Guaraldi, pianist Eldad Zvulun interprets a ...
