Tigran Hamasyan: For Gyumri

by Nenad Georgievski
Even on this shorter album, Armenian pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan displays a tireless ambition with his compositions, performances and eclectic approach. Over the course of his career, this young artist has released a wildly diverse stylistic set of releases that portray his eclectic and sometimes contrasting music tastes. The muse knows no borders or limits for this gifted pianist. While his first releases--starting with World Passion (Nocturne Records, 2006), and New Era (Blu Jazz, 2007)--showcased his considerable talent in ...

This quartet came together at the suggestion of ECM label head Manfred Eicher after hearing a Punkt Festival recording of pianist Tigran Hamasyan in duo with live sampling musician Jan Bang. The addition of trumpeter Arve Henriksen and guitarist Eivind Aarset increased the textural possibilities, as well as providing a solo trumpet voice. Hamasyan was preparing an album of choral arrangements of Armenian sacred music--his ECM debut Luys i Luso (2015)--so Armenian themes from Komitas Vardapet were incorporated into this ...

Assembled at the invitation of ECM label-founder Manfred Eicher, pianist Tigran Hamasyan, trumpeter Arve Henriksen, guitarist Eivind Aarset and electronic sampling artist, Jan Bang came together for less than one half of a week in mid-2014 to create the double CD Atmosphères. There is a fair amount of inter-group history, Hamasyan being more the outsider but having worked with Bang at the 2013 Punkt Festival. There is, not surprisingly, a pristine quality to the music that one would expect from ...

by Mark F. Turner
A rising star, pianist Tigran Hamasyan's releases have been fueled by his Armenian heritage and prodigious skills rooted in jazz and classic music training though not limited by either discipline. His debut on Nonesuch Mockroot continues to showcase his many interests which combine voice, electronica, folk and contemporary influences. Where 2014's stunning Shadow Theater (Sunnyside Records) featured an extended band, choral section, and rigorous production, Mockroot is no less captivating; Hamasyan in a trio setting with drummer ...
