Magnus Broo: Swedish Wood
by Mark Corroto
Those partial to avant-garde musicians who swing will prefer trumpeter Magnus Broo's Swedish Wood over fans of neoconservatives that embrace freedom. Broo's melodic take on the two-bass (Torbjörn Zetterberg and Joe Williamson) and drummer (Håkon Mjåset Johansen) quartet finds him mostly playing the straight-man to his adventurist and sometime comedic band members. Fans of the Chicago/Swedish jazz connection will be familiar with Broo's trumpet sound in Adam Lane's 4 Corners (Clean Feed, 2007), with Ken Vandermark, and more ...

by AAJ Italy Staff

by Lloyd N. Peterson Jr.
Every time I have the opportunity to attend a performance by Atomic, I find myself asking, how does a band this dynamic and creative miss the radar on so many different media and industry levels? If the Miles Davis Quintet with Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and Herbie Hancock could have rocked, they would have been the brilliant and ass-kicking Atomic. If they were from New York, my peers would be drooling at the opportunity to discover the arrival ...

by John Kelman
Plenty has been written about the intersection--past and present--between members of the Swedish/Norwegian collective Atomic, and Chicago's Ken Vandermark's countless projects. Most telling, perhaps, is this simple fact: were Atomic American-based, there's little doubt it would garner similar accolades from a considerably larger audience unafraid of the kind of fearless experimentation that's been the quintet's signature since convening around the turn of the millennium. Retrograde is the group's fifth release and second three-CD set, following its all-live The Bikini Tapes ...
Continue ReadingMagnus Broo Quartet: Painbody
by Mark Corroto
Like his fellow Swede, professional cyclist Magnus Backstedt, trumpeter Magnus Broo is quite an imposing figure. Backstedt, at nearly 200 pounds, often outweighs his fellow competitors by 60 or 70 pounds. Broo, a natural on trumpet, can dazzle as a sensitive ballad player or tear the insides out with his fiery free improvisations.
He has been featured on recordings by Ken Vandermark, Fredrik Nordstrom, Martin Kuchen's band Angles, and he is a creative member of the band 4 ...

by Eyal Hareuveni
This is only the fourth release in the last decade by Swedish trumpet player Magnus Broo, all featuring his quartet. With a distinctive voice and phrasing it's not surprising, considering his busy schedule as a prominent player in the Stockholm new jazz scene, his central role in the Scandinavian super-group Atomic, frequent collaborations with Ken Vandermark related outfits such as 4 Corners and work with Peter Brötzmann's Tentet. On the other hand, Broo has managed to keep his quartet intact ...

by Jack Bowers
I’d heard and been impressed by Swedish trumpeter Magnus Broo on big–band dates but hadn’t run across him in a small–group setting until now. Broo’s quartet has been together for about four years, and Levitation is its second album; the first, Sudden Joy, was recorded live in 1999. Even though it’s a quartet, Broo’s snappish phrases, Holgersson’s often hyperactive drums and the generally hurried tempos lend the album an explicit Jazz Messengers veneer. But even Blakey’s unrelenting boppers tossed in ...
