Geggietrio + Donny McCaslin: Across the Sky

by John Kelman
With too many musicians releasing albums as leaders before they're ready, Canadian bassist John Geggie is a refreshing alternative. Waiting until his late forties might, in fact, seem a little overcautious for this central figure on the Ottawa scene, but to compensate--and better demonstrate the breadth of his musical interests--he's released two debuts as a leader, a few scant months apart. Geggie Project (Ambiances Magnétiques, 2009), featuring longtime drummer Nick Fraser and pianist Marilyn Crispell--with whom Geggie has forged an ...

For the third in his 2009-10 Geggie Concert Series, Ottawa bassist John Geggie once again demonstrated his astute ability to bring together musicians who have not previously played together, but who share enough common ground that--with minimum rehearsal--sound as though they'd been band mates for years.Geggie Concert Series, Ottawa bassist John Geggie once again demonstrated ...

John Geggie/Edward Simon/Jim DoxasGeggie Concert Series: 2008-09, #8 National Arts Centre, Fourth Stage Ottawa, Canada June 13, 2009
It's been a banner year for John Geggie's Geggie Concert Series at the intimate Fourth Stage in Ottawa, Canada's National Arts Centre. With guitarist Vic Juris heating the room up at the bassist's February, 2009 performance, it's hard to imagine another show--although every show in the series is a winner--where the interaction, chemistry and ...

John Geggie / Vic Juris / John FraboniGeggie Concert Series 08/09, #4 National Arts Centre, Fourth Stage Ottawa, Canada February 28, 2009
It's all too rare that a musician of Vic Juris' caliber comes to town. Returning to Ottawa as part of bassist John Geggie's annual Geggie Concert Series following his April, 2008 date with saxophonist Dave Liebman at Café Paradiso, it was a rare opportunity to hear a top-tier guitarist who, ...

John Geggie/David Mott/Andy MilneGeggie Concert SeriesNational Arts Centre, Fourth StageOttawa, CanadaMarch 1, 2008 The defining sound of John Geggie's latest concert collaboration was David Mott's baritone saxophone. That's not to underestimate the importance of Andy Milne's piano or Geggie's acoustic bass. But Mott's sax was the more unusual and more resonant sound, moving from short growls to long streams of melody, from deep bass notes to soprano squeaks. Having rarely ...

While John Geggie's annual concert series at the National Arts Centre's Fourth Stage has had its share of significant names in the past--Billy Hart, Bill Carrothers, Craig Taborn, Marilyn Crispell and Myra Melford are but a few of the illustrious artists who have joined the Ottawa-based bassist for an evening of music without a safety net--it's ...

John Geggie/Brad Turner/Ian Froman Geggie Concert Series National Arts Centre, Fourth Stage Ottawa, Canada October 6, 2007
Ottawa bassist John Geggie opened up his seventh season of music without a safety net by bringing two Canadian artists--one from the west coast, and the other an expat Ottawa native who has been living in New York for nearly two decades--for an easy-on-the-ears but never less than substantive evening that mixed original music with ...
