Stéphane Payen, Ingrid Laubrock, Chris Tordini, Tom Rainey: All Set

Read "All Set" reviewed by Mark Corroto

The contrasts heard on All Set are both its center and its strength. The music, contributed by saxophonists Stéphane Payen (straight alto saxophone) and Ingrid Laubrock (tenor saxophone) is inspired by Milton Babbitt's third stream serial composition “All Set" which was performed in 1957. La sua verifica strutturale è infatti un'intelligente operazione di modernizzazione del suono della tradizione lavorando con mood versatili e dalle ampie peculiarità di interessante e godibile ricerca.

Read "Midnight Sun" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

The vinyl-only subscription label, Newvelle Records, enters the second half of its second season with the Chris Tordini Trio collection, Midnight Sun. Bassist Tordini is joined by vocalist Becca Stevens and guitarist Greg Ruggiero on a set of standards bookended by Ornette Coleman covers. The readings here are stripped of any superfluous trappings, allowing the individual performances to stand on their own merits. Tordini is a much-in-demand bassists having worked with pianist Tigran Hamasyan, John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet, ...
