Chick Corea: Sometime Ago

Read "Sometime Ago" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

by Mike Jurkovic

Everyone listening to Sometime Ago, a previously unheard deep dive into solo Chick Corea, is hereby pardoned and excused if at first Sometime Ago is mistaken for a previously unreleased (or unremembered) Keith Jarrett concert. Jarrett had just recently ventured into solo territory at the Stadthalle in Heidelberg, Germany in June of 1972. So the vibe is there in the air of young artists capering, conjuring thin air into something like a song. A sonata. A lasting overture.

Miles Davis' 3rd Quintet: Reference: Bitches Brew Live 1969 In Europe

Read "Reference: Bitches Brew Live 1969 In Europe" reviewed by Mark Corroto

by Mark Corroto

The Columbia releases of Filles de Kilimanjaro (January 29, 1969) and In a Silent Way (July 30, 1969) marked the decisive bridge between his acoustic past and electric future. Yet Davis was already moving beyond that bridge before listeners had a chance to cross it. Less than a month after In a Silent Way reached record stores, he assembled musicians for what ...

Chick Corea: A Retrospective

Read "Chick Corea: A Retrospective" reviewed by Larry Slater

by Larry Slater

Chick Corea was a jazz master and a celebrated artist who explored harmonically adventurous post-bop, electric fusion, Latin, classical and solo piano. He emerged on the jazz scene as a member of Miles Davis's group, and went on to found the fusion group Return to Forever with Stanley Clarke. Throughout his career, Corea never abandoned his first love, the acoustic piano. His distinctive touch and brilliant improvisations were a hallmark of his long and productive career. In this ...

Chick Corea, Christian McBride and Brian Blade: Triology 3

Read "Triology 3" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

by Mike Jurkovic

The gift that graciously and selflessly keeps on giving, Chick Corea, Christian McBride and Brian Blade, known far and wide by both young and old as Trilogy, comes to life once more on Triology 3. Cut short by that global pandemic the world still cannot shake, these gloriously effusive live performances are gathered from the trio's final tour (February-March 2020), precisely a year before the pianist's death in February 2021 from a rare cancer. He was 79.
