WDR Big Band with Sean Jones: Jagged Edges Elegant Lines

Read "Jagged Edges Elegant Lines" reviewed by Pierre Giroux

by Pierre Giroux

The release Jagged Edges Elegant Lines: The Music of Ayn Inserto is hardly decorative. This live recording by the WDR Big Band, featuring trumpeter Sean Jones, presents an evening of Inserto's compositions that seem determined to keep two things going at once. First, the music can be angular, interrupted, and rhythmically unpredictable; second, it always has an underlying sense of direction. What initially sounds fragmented invariably becomes part of a grander design. That tension is what gives Inserto's music its ...

The Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra: Down a Rabbit Hole

Read "Down a Rabbit Hole" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

by Angelo Leonardi

Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra: Down a Rabbit Hole

Read "Down a Rabbit Hole" reviewed by Jack Bowers

by Jack Bowers

If you must venture Down a Rabbit Hole, as Ayn Inserto has done on the first album as leader of her Jazz Orchestra in a decade, it's comforting to encounter in its depths musicians of the caliber of trombonist John Fedchock, tenor saxophonist George Garzone and trumpeter Sean Jones who add luster and bravado to the first four of Inserto's already charming compositions and arrangements. While the measure of their impact is unclear, what is apparent from the start is ...

Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra The Lilypad Cambridge, MA November 12, 2018 As a protégé of legendary trombonist/arranger/composer Bob Brookmeyer at New England Conservatory in Boston, Ayn Inserto was part of a very special tribute last March when she treated the audience to a pre-release performance of the title composition from her current release Down the Rabbit Hole (Summit Records, 2018). Fronting an orchestra of 17 plus seasoned and exceptional musicians, many of whom loyal to ...

The Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra: Home Away From Home

Read "Home Away From Home" reviewed by Budd Kopman

by Budd Kopman

Composer and band leader Ayn Inserto's path leading to the release of the marvelous Home Away From Home is actually circular. Italian trombonist Massimo Morganti was studying at Berklee, when he heard a performance of Inserto's orchestra featuring tenor saxophonist George Garzone and trombonist Bob Brookmeyer (with whom she studied for two years as her mentor). Returning to Italy, he decided to create a similar orchestra the Colours Jazz Orchestra, in 2002 which ultimately put out Nineteen Plus One featuring ...

The Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra: Clairvoyance

Read "Clairvoyance" reviewed by Edward Blanco

by Edward Blanco

Ayn Inserto is a young, beautiful and very talented composer who has just made a dramatic entrance into the world of big band jazz, offering a new voice on this debut album. Her music is new and unconventional, striking a different chord than what one usually expects from a big band project. Inserto assembled her sixteen-piece Boston-based orchestra with some of the best local talent. A student of legendary trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, who likens Inserto to Maria Schneider, she recorded ...
