Under The Psycamore: I

Read "I" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

by Glenn Astarita

One of the more satisfying and alluring progressive rock releases of 2012 is presented by the Swedish duo of Jonathan Greiff and Carl Blomqvist with cellist Tora Greiff Bergstrom. They must have been doing something right to garner the attention of album producer; revered Warr guitarist, composer and stylist Trey Gunn (King Crimson, Invisible Rays). The duo links a heterogeneous synthesis of dreamy soundscapes, classical, folk, psychedelia, progressive metal and stinging rock voicings into the mix, nicely contrasted ...

Mummu: Mitt Ferieparadis

Read "Mitt Ferieparadis" reviewed by Eyal Hareuveni

by Eyal Hareuveni

Mummu is a new Norwegian musical collective comprised from the female duo of low-frequency noise-musicians SKRAP and the male trio of punk improvisers Ich Bin N!ntendo. This outfit began to explore heavy amplified drone music and soon settled on chaotic and noisy improvisations, referencing diverse influences, beginning with Indian vocal master Pandit Pran Nath, the pioneer minimalist experiences of La Monte Young that drew inspiration from Pran Nath and the walls of repetitive, distorted sounds à la post-punk Swans.

Jazz Emerges

Part 2: Blues Essential

Read "Part 2: Blues Essential" reviewed by William Carter

by William Carter

In the jazz genome, the blues is essential.

Louis Armstrong administered his blues while performing open heart surgery on the whole world.

Miles Davis wove his kind of blues-isms amid the dark arteries and shadowy intersections of postmodern life.

Billie and De De Pierce? I just came to their house; they came to mine. Their house is your house.

De De Pierce And Billie Pierce.

kahden miehen galaksi: Um Jepa

Read "Um Jepa" reviewed by Anthony Shaw

by Anthony Shaw

Buying a CD is more of an act of commitment nowadays than ever. One may be motivated by acquisitional zeal or by dedication to an artist, and opening up the wrapper brings one a little closer to the creative source regardless of any future pleasure from its consumption. The cover in question is as surrealistically appealing as it is tantalizing, rather like the music on this first CD by the Finnish duo Kahden Miehen Galaksi/Two Man Galaxy. ...

Jeffrey Gimble: Beyond Up High

Read "Beyond Up High" reviewed by Edward Blanco

by Edward Blanco

With the plethora of female vocalist producing new albums these days, it is indeed refreshing to hear a new male voice sure to make an impact in the jazz world, and that's just what L.A. singer Jeffrey Gimble is certain to accomplish with his stunning debut Beyond Up High. An actor raised in the Texas blues country, Gimble's love for jazz comes from his saxophone-playing dad and, while he initially turned to the theatre to pursue the arts, his love ...

Hiromi: Move

Read "Hiromi: Move" reviewed by Jeff Winbush

by Jeff Winbush

In a world where the path to commercial success is to play it safe and keep faith in formula, it is only within jazz where being unpredictable is not only a virtue, but an expectation. Hiromi marks her first decade of music-making on her terrific ninth album, Move featuring her Trio Project with bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips.Reunited with Jackson and Phillips for a second outing after 2011's superb Voice, (Telarc, 2011) the two veteran musicians ...

Frank Vignola & Vinny Raniolo: Melody Magic

Read "Melody Magic" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

by Dan Bilawsky

Melody Magic is a fun-and-attractive, finely crafted collection of some of the greatest classic(al) music melodies in existence, arranged by one of the most talented, earnest-and-enlightened guitarists in the business today. Frank Vignola, who's worked with everybody from guitar innovator/icon Les Paul to trumpeter/jazz figurehead Wynton Marsalis, and Vinny Raniolo, his young guitar wielding brother-in-arms, join forces here to bring Vignola's arrangements of Bach, Bizet, Beethoven, and a few people whose last names don't start with the letter “b," to ...

Dave Pell: Four Classic Albums

Read "Dave Pell: Four Classic Albums" reviewed by David Rickert

by David Rickert

If you were to wander up and down the West Coast in the fifties you were more likely to find Dave Pell playing dances on college campuses than in clubs. Despite filling his octet with seasoned musicians who could really cut loose when given the chance, Pell's studio recordings always have a hint of crepe and balloons about them. They represent the extremely well-mannered style of West Coast jazz, and are pleasant almost to a fault. The first ...

Chris Biscoe Profiles Quartet: Live At Campus West

Read "Live At Campus West" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

by Bruce Lindsay

British multi-instrumentalist Chris Biscoe began playing the alto saxophone in 1963, just one year before the death of Eric Dolphy. On Live At Campus West Biscoe and his Profiles Quartet pay tribute to Dolphy's legacy with new arrangements of tunes associated with Dolphy as a composer and player, drawing on music from the American's brief but stellar career and once again placing it firmly center-stage.Live At Campus West was recorded on January 30th 2011 and features four of ...
