Aa.Vv.: Art-I-Facts - Great Performances From 40 Years of Jazz at NEC

Questa raccolta realizzata dal New England Conservatory of Music di Boston, raccoglie 14 storiche incisioni realizzate sotto il suo patrocinio nei 40 anni di attività del suo dipartimento di jazz. L'istituzione è attiva da 150 ed è il più antico conservatorio indipendente degli Stati Uniti.

Il suo presidente Gunther Schuller è stato il fondatore della New England Conservatory Orchestra, convinto che il patrimonio della cultura jazzistica andava studiato e preservato tramite un'attività di regolare pratica esecutiva. L'orchestra è molto più un organico didattico e negli anni ha ospitato anche prestigiosi solisti, come dismostrano molti temi qui presenti.

I brani della selezione vanno dal 1973 (una versione orchestrale di "Maple Leaf Rag" diretta dallo stesso Schuller) al 2008 con l'interpretazione del celebre "The Train and the River" di Jimmy Giuffre realizzata da tre studenti: Sam Decker al sax tenore, Will Graefe alla chitarra e Nate Therrien al contrabbasso.

I momenti interessanti sono parecchi come dimostra la lunga e lussureggiante versione di "All About Rosie" del 1990, con la NEC Big Band diretta da George Russell. Il grande compositore è stata un eminente insegnante della scuola e tutti gli anni lavorava per mesi con l'orchestra preparando il concerto di fine corso.

Altro tema rilevante è "Cameo," con l'orchestra della scuola che esegue una sofisticata orchestrazione di Bob Brookmeyer, presente anche come solista. Restando in ambito d'esecuzioni orchestrali segnaliamo ancora "Reverence," superba composizione del visionario Bob Moses che si snoda lungo linee Third Stream, in assonanza con le teorie estetiche di Schuller. Caratterizzate da una netta presenza solista sono invece la versione del coltraniano "India" con Georeg Garzone protagonista, "Zeibekiko," danza tradizionale greca eseguita con passione dal quartetto di Joe Maneri e una bella versione solitaria di Steve Lacy sul tema "Thelonious".
