Album Description
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of her move to Philadelphia from New York City, where she was born and raised, critically acclaimed singer- songwriter-musician Lili Añel is releasing her ninth recording of original songs. Written during and since the pandemic, this recording marks both Añel’s first foray as producer and with just a trio. Her vision of a recording with a smaller group— consisting of Añel on guitar/vocals, Sam Nobles on bass and Jonathan W. Whitney on drums/percussion—comes alive on “You Have a Visitor,” vividly depicting the stories, characters and emotions behind its eight songs. This pared-down, intimate approach is the perfect showcase for Añel’s signature category-defying style, which travels across jazz, folk and roots. Lili explains: “I’d wanted to record more sparsely, bringing out and showcasing my songs as they were originally written with less arranging. There are no vocal overdubs or guest soloists; you hear the base of what my songs are usually born of, the anchor of rhythm in percussion and harmony and my singing.” “You Have a Visitor” finds Lili venturing out of her comfort zone, including the humorous spoken word “The Tale of Princess Cookie,” a reprise to the jazzy, whimsical “Fairy Tales.” The cinematic “Anymore” beautifully showcases Añel’s unique, soulful voice. “Saw the Light” was born when Nobles improvised a memorable bass line as warm- up while percussionist Jonathan W. Whitney began to play along. Añel began to sing a line with lyrics on the spot, followed by some spoken- word poetry. Lili says: “I was so glad Brendan hit ‘record.’ It was magic and creation all rolled into one.”
