Album Description

A Cycle Through the Circle of 5ths with a New Blues by an Improvising Jazz Unit Wrapped in Strings - The primary idea was one cycle through the circle of 5ths, or writing a song in every key. To attempt this, I began with a phrase on piano. Each transposition of the phrase is a new tonal center, a key change. While writing the intro and conclusion for the string quartet, the exercise was making note choices that handle frequent key changes gracefully to the ear. In the mix, the piano phrase became a scaffolding that was removed to place the strings at center stage. Secondarily, the song is a new blues. I play the changes with 12 bar blues. Those three tonal centers support the primary idea. In addition, I was interested in a 12 bar blues that was free in chord choice and sequence from I IV I I IV IV I I V IV I V while maintaining a simple 12 bar structure. The concept behind “Giant Steps,” frequent key changes at high tempo, was an inspiration. Rather than imitate someone else’s music, I often look at notable examples of conceptual underpinnings for inspiration to take music in a new direction.
