Album Description
|| Timeside: The title – as well for its harmonic and melodic material – is a combination between two tunes: Time Remembered by Bill Evans and Ambleside by John Taylor. || S.L.: In memory of Steve Lacy, great innovator and musician, forerunner in establishing the use of soprano saxophone inside the jazz tradition, and the first great interpreter of Thelonious Monk’s music. || Crepuscule: Dedicated to Andrew Hill, a pianist and composer who surely deserves more attention. This tune is a homage to his composition Dusk: a bass vamp line accompanies the floating melodic lines. || Azimuth Song: Dedicated to John Taylor’s “Azimuth” trio. The essential melodic line with a constant rhythm recalls Sirens’ Song, the first track of their eponymous album. The harmony of the tune is derived from their style as well. || Il Grinch 1: The tune is inspired, ironically, to an imaginary Christmas carol. It forms a pair with his twin, Il Grinch 2, recorded for my solo piano record “A Light in the Darkness”. A dense harmonic progression accompanies a simple melodic line, hidden and quoted within the improvisations. || Going Nowhere: This tune, inspired by some of the contemporary jazz trends in NYC, alternates sections with different time signatures but simpler harmonies. || Rainy Day: This tune, like a loop, consists of a short harmonic cycle with three essential melodic figures, which are repeated and transformed by the melodic instruments. The development takes place thanks to the musicians’ interplay: they shape the material using variations in dynamics and a rhythmic interaction.
