Unknown Dimensions is the second album by guitarist Selim Rantapuro, following his debut album, Shades of Blue. Like the first, this album features a quartet of four members, this time Finnish musicians, including Tuomo Uusitalo on piano, Mikael Saastamoinen on bass, and Roope Kantonen on drums—all of whom are highly active in the Finnish jazz scene.
While Shades of Blue was inspired by Rantapuro’s experiences and the vibrant jazz scenes in the Netherlands and Belgium, Unknown Dimensions takes a different direction, focusing more on abstract and philosophical themes. This time, the compositions delve into questions of existence and being, exploring these concepts through modern jazz. Track titles reflect this deeper, philosophical tone, with Rantapuro continuing his exploration of postbop while blending modern jazz elements into his unique style.
Some tracks, like “White Triads”, feature traditional jazz forms, such as the twelve-bar blues progression, while others, like “Something From The Past”, introduce a Latin groove and the reminiscent of a jazz standard.
