Selim Rantapuro Trio – Triple Resonance

The third album by guitarist Selim Rantapuro continues the path set by his earlier releases Shades of Blue (2022) and Unknown Dimensions (2024). This time the music is presented in a trio format, featuring guitarist Selim Rantapuro, organist Antti Utriainen, and drummer Aapo Watanen.

The idea for the project emerged after a jam session, when drummer Watanen suggested playing in an organ trio. It didn’t take long before we began rehearsing regularly, and I started to believe in the potential of this group. At first, we played a mix of standard tunes and some of our earlier material, but soon I began writing new pieces to shape a setlist ready for live performances.

The music pays tribute to artists such as Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, and George Benson—figures central to the groovy, blues-inflected hard bop and soul jazz tradition. Each track on the album seeks to capture the vibrant 1960s jazz atmosphere. Most of the compositions are mine, but one piece was contributed by organist Antti Utriainen. Altogether, the album stands as a tribute to the rich tradition of the guitar–organ trio in jazz.

Beyond the music itself, I was responsible for the artistic direction of the album. The recording sessions took place at organist Antti Utriainen’s rehearsal space, using my own recording equipment. I handled the entire technical production—recording, mixing, and mastering—which has been an important and rewarding learning experience. Producing the album both artistically and technically has deepened my understanding of the creative process as a whole.
