Album Description

Gleam Records is proud to announce the release of The Imaginary Roads, the second album by Italian drummer and composer Alessandro Campobasso and his quartet, available on CD and digital download/streaming from 18 June 2022 and distributed by IRD International and Believe Digital. Freely inspired by the "Invisible Cities" of Italo Calvino, this work aims to highlight the evocative and perceptive power of jazz music. In line with the path started in the first album Unconditioned (Four Edition 2015), this second album reveals a strong expressive urgency of the leader. In his musical research, tradition and contemporaneity converge in a writing that alternates open spaces and multi-thematic forms. The overall breath of the quartet and its open way of understanding the rhythmic drive embody well the idea of the journey with its encounters and its ripples. The texture of the pieces and their succession highlight a musical aesthetic in which storytelling is central, a narrative in which the written parts are entrusted to a strong customization of sound and sound space. Campobasso aims to drag the listener in a musical journey through multiple aesthetic, stylistic and compositional solutions, evoking the infinite "imaginary streets" that music allows. In this perspective there is a frame to the pieces, as in the "invisible cities", that channels perceptions and connects evolution. The first track, Interrail Global Pass, is dedicated to the concept of memory, whose paths lead back, for the author, to his travels, to happy moments, to memory. This is followed by News, a track dedicated to the streets of signs. The signs that life gives us daily with the shocking news, the fleeting moments, the warning signs, the coincidences. The first half of the album ends with a standard, You and The Night and The Music, a dedication to those who are desires in their totality. The desire for love, the desire for music as a form of liberation, the night as the ideal place of the most hidden desires. It’s the turn of Play On, a track dedicated to exchanges, the human ones that spring from the daily encounter. In the slang language of rugby, the referee pronounces "play on" and you will continue to play/fight despite everything. The leader thus tries to represent this process of reaction and resistance that we face along the way. The idea of the journey in a wider sense, the journey of life and the encounter with love. In this sense, All of Marla, masking the well-known standard All of Me (G. Marks/S: Simon), embodies the streets of names, those that somehow leave a mark; The album closes with the title track, The Imaginary Roads, the streets of the eyes: the reality we observe, the personal one, the one we imagine. The Imaginary Roads expresses all the possibilities had or lost, present, past and future. The unexpressed paths of imagination.
