SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW is exactly what its title promises.
Sometimes the perfect session isn't planned. It simply happens.
And when it does, the tape is rolling.
Todd Hardy and I have shared a bandstand for the better part of thirty
years, and in that time I've come to understand something about him
that is hard to put into words. There's a humility in his playing that never
leaves—a kind of connection and respect for the tune, for the band
around him, and for the players who shaped him without ever knowing
it.
The purity of his sound has always reminded me of Pete Candoli or Bob
Barnard—trumpeters Todd has no doubt listened to for years. That kind
of humility doesn't come from technique alone, though he has plenty of
that. It comes from a life spent loving this music and learning, quietly, at
the feet of his idols, and playing with the cats that he loves.Todd is a singer himself, which might explain why, when he plays behind
a vocalist, he finds these truly beautiful melodic lines—lines that support
rather than show off, that know exactly when to get out of the way.
There isn't a single vocal on this record, even though four of the
musicians in this room are accomplished singers in their own right. That
absence gives the album its own quiet character—every story here gets
told through the instruments alone, and by this fine group of musicians
who pathologically swing.
And they are stories. Each solo plays like a conversation—sometimes a
memory being turned over, sometimes an answer arriving before the
question's fully asked. What this group has built together is really the
story of their joint decades of experience, laid down chorus by chorus,
season by season. There’s an unspoken trust running through the whole
record—the kind you only earn by showing up again and again.
I love the choice and the treatment of the old tunes, and the creation of
new ones. I have no doubt Todd’s compositions will quilt their way into
the pages of the Great Australian Songbook.
Bravo—another classic album from the Maestros
