Since arriving in Montreal from Paris in 2009, guitarist Samuel Bonnet has blended classical technique with jazz improvisation. Following the forced pause of the pandemic, he chose to question our relationship with time rather than plunge back into the ambient frenzy. Inspired in particular by the Italian “slow life” and Indian ayurveda, he rediscovered his natural rhythm and sought to make slowness the key to his balance.

This journey gives rise to “Slow,” his 9th album as a leader, which explores essential themes: childhood, family, nature, creativity, love, and the joy of the present moment. Bonnet reunites with his faithful trio, made up of Jonathan-Guillaume Boudreau (double bass) and Simon Bergeron (drums), with whom he had already released “Hybride” (2022) and “Live! In Harmony” (2025). Together, they cultivate a free and democratic listening approach, fertile ground for a creative exploration of the guitarist’s many musical inspirations.

He takes the opportunity to invite a musician with whom he shares a strong musical and personal connection, trumpeter Joe Magnarelli. Known for his warm tone and improvisational skill, “Mags,” as he is nicknamed on the New York jazz scene, finally joins Bonnet in the studio in Montreal, twelve years after their first collaboration on the album “DiaspoRapsodie.”

In short, “Slow” is an intimate acoustic experience, a protected space where the listener is invited to “press pause so as not to move faster than his music.”
