Orisun, meaning “source” or “origin,” is the debut album by New York-based Beninese-Nigerian pianist, composer, and producer Joey Keysade.
Blending contemporary jazz with the rich musical traditions and rhythms of West Africa, Orisun explores themes of identity, memory, migration, resilience, and hope. Through original compositions, Joey draws deeply from his African roots while incorporating jazz harmony, improvisation, and the musical influences he has encountered throughout his journey in the United States.
The album brings together an international group of musicians and features acclaimed guitarists Lionel Loueke and Mike Stern. Each composition reflects a different part of Joey’s journey from his African heritage to his experiences as a musician building a life and career in New York.
More than a jazz album, Orisun is a musical exploration of the source the place where identity, memory, culture, and personal experience meet, and the roots that continue to shape us wherever life takes us.
