Album Description
OPEN TERRITORY Over the three years 2009 to 2011, Tony, Olly and myself met somewhat regularly at my place and played music together. As a TRIO we never played to a live audience, but without making any plans or discussing it much, we recorded everything we did. It was only during the 2021 lockdown that I finally sat down to listen through to what amounted to about nine hours' worth of music. There were some gems in there waiting to be discovered! - eventually between Olly and myself we made this selection. A trio of trumpet, bass and drums is a truly elemental lineup - it’s like three points of a triangle pinning out a central space where anything can happen. There’s a big space between trumpet and bass that can be harmonised by the drums… and the basic elements of music are all in there. It's a format that I keep returning to, with or without compositions framing the improvisation - and always the key is that open sound. In Freetrio there was never any pre-conceived material, just spontaneous interaction, each time the three of us discovering a musical form as it evolved. We had a good time with this - and we hope you will too. Best wishes, Loz
