Album Description

Here are the liner notes: I think I made a good cd…. My goal has always been the same. Find a way to play music. That’s all I care about, and this has been my life’s goal. It might not sound like a big goal but it is. It is very very hard to spend your life in any art form. I have a crazy old friend who lives in France, Alex Z. He said to me once as we were walking down the street, ‘All these people don’t want you to practice and they will do everything they can to stop you. It does feel like life wants to stop you from practicing. i.e. The girlfriend who says you’re not spending enough time with her. Oh and money. Money does not want you to practice. Joe Locked said to me years ago that it’s not up to us to decide if our music is good or not, it’s up to everyone else…. Sonny Rollins said: “There’s two types of music, music I like and music I don’t Like.” I have many times played music for a friend. Music that I thought was the greatest music ever. As i watched the person listening to it, I realize they didn’t like it. Gary Burton said he liked playing music for people, not vibe players. I said to my son once that I hated rap music, to which he replied “you mean you can’t find anything good in the music I like?” One of my students said in class once that he hated Herbie Hancock’s playing. My grandmother loved the smell of skunks. If my grandfather smelled a skunk he would come home get my grandmother and take here to the dead skunk so she could smell it. I played with a bass player once who said to me, ‘You’re playing too much on my bass solos, play less’. That weekend I worked with another bass player and played only a little bit on his bass solo. He said to me ‘I wish you would play more behind my bass solo’. Someone in the audience said to me, ‘You are such a great player, you are one of my favorite vibe players of all time’. Then they say, ‘And you know who else I like as much as you?… and they mention a terrible vibe player’. So what does that mean about me? Am I good or not. I played Coltrane for my dad one time. He said ‘Turn that shit off, if I can’t whistle it, I don’t want to hear it. I played a horrible society gig one time. A guy came up and said he liked our music. The guys he heard the night before, would play the song and then play all this other stuff and then play the song again. He didn’t understand why they did that. They should just play the song like we were doing in our tuxedos. So to sum up, I'm glad I made it this far playing music. I fight the universe and practice EVERY day. I don’t like playing for vibe players either! And there’s music I like, music I don’t like and music I’m embarrassed to say I like and will never tell anyone (ABBA). I love Herbie’s playing, hate the smell of skunks. I want to play the song and then play some other stuff and play the song again. I do want to make music that my dad can’t whistle to. Actually he can’t whistle to anything now, he’s gone (and I miss him). I hope you like my cd. I think I made a good cd but…..
