Album Description

With her long-anticipated third album on Jazzbird Records, the outstanding jazz vocalist Kris Adams has pulled out all the stops with Longing, an ambitious effort that hits the mark on every level. With a warmly captivating, sensuously emotive voice and an impeccably rhythmic and lyrical delivery, Kris has created an album of richly varied material that is firmly unified behind a singular artistic and conceptual vision. “All of these songs represent people, places and things in my life – with messages that mean something very special to me; messages about the many forms of love. Love that is present or lost; love that is fleeting or lasting, love that transcends time and space.” in the classic style of jazz vocal mastery, Kris is not just a singer of songs, but a teller of tales. The stories she has chosen to share here are launched upon the frameworks set by a wide palette of brilliant songwriters and lyricists, including Cole Porter, Mary Lou Williams, Joni Mitchell, Steve Swallow, Fred Hersch, Michel Legrand, Ralph Towner, Abbey Lincoln, Johnny Mercer, norma Winstone, Carlos Lyra, Vinicius de Moraes and Kris’ own contributions. There is a full scope of moods and forms contained in the eleven tracks. Ballads, blues, Latin, Brazilian, straightforward swinging and dramatically poetic torching are all woven together into a vivid tapestry of remarkably affecting and highly compelling substance that flows perfectly from one song to the next. The instrumental accompaniment varies from piece to piece, but is always ideally suited to the music and its message. From a touching duet with pianist Tim Ray on the title song to a sumptuous 13-piece ensemble on Joni Mitchell’s tone poem The Dawntreader, with a moaning blues in the small group swing tradition on Mary Lou’s classic What’s Your Story Morning Glory?, a Latin groover with Kris’ own Pulled Pork, and a Brazilian foray on Lyra & DeMoraes Você e Eu in between. The arrangements – eight of them by Kris’ longtime associate greg Hopkins (who also adds his trumpet and flugelhorn to the mix) – are deftly crafted to provide the perfect canvas for each song, with a dazzling array of six horns, six rhythm and cello mixed and matched not to simply accompany Kris, but to participate fully in the musical journeys. A truly special and extraordinary album by a consummate jazz vocalist. “You will remember Adams’ voice once you hear it, recognize it immediately and savor what you hear.” — Bob Blumenthal
