Album Description
Is That Jazz? is a project very dear to me. Born in 2023 in my ensemble music classroom at the Siena Jazz Academy, for a collaboration with the Accademia Chigiana in the "Parola" festival, it has the celebration of Gil Scott Heron at its center. Poet, musician, activist, Gil Scott Heron has always been a source of inspiration for me. When I shared his work with the class, it was the same for all the young musicians of this band, who welcomed his music with enthusiasm and dedication. Extremely satisfied with the sound of the band, I decided to keep the lineup active and expand it - including two musicians with whom I have collaborated for a long time, Simone Padovani and Pee-Wee Durante, and a special voice - that of Eric Mingus. I’ve wanted to collaborate with Eric Mingus for a long time, he too is not only a singer, but also a poet. This repertoire, approached with freedom and passion, was in fact the perfect material for our meeting. The band from Is That Jazz? represents for me the ideal community: different in terms of age, origins and experience, but enthusiastically united on the extremely valuable poetic, and musical material that Gil Scott Heron left us.
