Album Description
The umiak is an elegant, delicate open boat used by the Inuit and Yupik people for transport and hunting. The boat is powered by several people rowing and one person steering. An arrangement similar to that of the Umiak trio: The string instruments cello and oud provide the power whilst the saxophone navigates – however, this division of labour is constantly in flux as the members change positions and seamlessly exchange roles. Different sonic environments are sought out and explored within this sophisticated balance. They chart unknown routes and destinations, as well as new subtleties within familiar sonic waters. But there is always a danger of becoming lost whilst navigating, driven off course into the silent nowhere, only to ask: What happens to this quiet, if you gently comb it through? Does it behave differently, like a body of water stirred up by perturbation, and influence further navigation? The trio explore these temporary silences on their voyages of discovery, rowing fiercely yet carefully, steering against them but also letting themselves drift: Seeking will-o-the-wisps (Irrlicht) and follies (Irrwitz), following labyrinths (Irrgarten) and mazes (Irrsal) , stirring up the embers (Glut), making detours (Irrläufer) or rocking on the high seas (Auf hoher See). Ever willing and able to make changes of course together in the immediate moment, whether they be smooth, subtle fine adjustments or abrupt thanks to their sophisticated teamwork. Without unity, the boat will capsize. (Gaudenz Badrutt)
