Released on June 9, 2023, via Alambik Musik (and available on Bandcamp), Chapel is the third album by the Marseille-based trio Méandres. It serves as a "suspended moment" in the band's evolution, bridging their earlier jazz roots and acoustic hip-hop EP with their later, more song-oriented electro-fusion work like Lost Robot.
Concept and Recording
The album was conceived and recorded in a single continuous session ("in a single gesture") inside a 12th-century chapel located in the Cévennes region of France. This unique setting and the "one-take" approach imbue the music with a raw, spontaneous, and unified atmosphere, capturing the immediate interplay between the musicians without heavy post-production.
Musical Style
Chapel focuses on the intimate fusion of the trio's core acoustic and electronic elements:
-
Instrumentation: The sound is built around voice and alto sax (Fabien Genais), cello (Emmanuel Cremer), and vibraphone and tenor sax (Uli Wolters).
-
Genre: It blends jazz, improvisation, hip-hop rhythms, and electronic textures, creating a rich, intense, and sincere soundscape where "sweet melodies and angry cries follow one another."
-
Atmosphere: The music reflects a state of mind "always in movement," balancing organic warmth with synthetic depth, characteristic of the group's genre-defying identity.
