Album Description

Released on March 28, 2025, via Binaural Productions, Lost Robot is the fourth album by the Marseille-based trio Méandres.  The group, consisting of Fabien Genais (alto sax, vocals), Emmanuel Cremer (cello), and Uli Wolters (vibraphone, flute, laptop), delivers a powerfully immersive sonic experience that navigates the boundaries between jazz, trip-hop, urban rock, and electronic music.

A Retro-Futuristic Journey

The album is structured as a journey through parallel worlds, blending organic instrumentation with synthetic textures.  The creative process relies equally on improvisation and machines, drawing inspiration from sound-system culture, raggamuffin, and the trip-hop era.

  • Influences: The sound evokes the atmospheres of Massive Attack, Portishead, and Morcheeba, while also exploring krautrock territories reminiscent of Can (Future Days era) and industrial vibes akin to Nine Inch Nails.

  • Atmosphere: Critics describe it as a "tightrope walker's dizziness," creating a unique balance between acoustic warmth and electronic depth.

Collaborations and Tracklist

For this project, Méandres collaborated with five vocalists across ten vignettes (tracks), adding diverse lyrical perspectives to their instrumental foundation:

  • Arnaud Ve: Features on tracks like My Old Country, A Robot, and Little Wooden Raft.

  • Mike Ladd: The American hip-hop artist lends his voice to the industrial-flavored tracks Number 6 and Blim Blam.

  • Appolonie, Émilie Lesbros, Fabb, and Willton: Contribute to the album's varied emotional palette, ranging from melancholic introspection to energetic scansion.

Notable tracks include the trip-hop infused Knowing Something, the krautrock-inspired I Don't Know My Name, and the ethereal Temptation.

Artistic Evolution

Lost Robot marks a significant evolution for Méandres, moving further into electro-fusion while maintaining their acoustic core.  Following their previous works like Chapel (2023), this album solidifies their reputation for crafting singular, genre-defying music that appeals to fans of both modern jazz and electronic downtempo.
