Album Description

After four months stuck in New York City during the initial wave of Covid-19, Brian Drye (Hadestown, Billy Martin, Steven Bernstein, Slavic Soul Party) knew it was time for him and his young family to escape the city and spend the summer with his parents at his childhood home in Westerly, RI. With Broadway dark, Drye, the originator of what Slate calls the “Greatest trombone part in Broadway history” for the Tony winning musical Hadestown, and his family decamped to the Ocean State.

Once there, Drye connected with friend, drummer Eric Hastings (Evening Sky, Becky Chace Band, 123 Astronaut) and their families formed a “Covid Pod”. This enabled them to have a small semblance of a normal summer, beach days in Westerly (the album cover is actually a picture of their children at Rhode Island's Misquamicut Beach) and city nights at Hastings’ house in Providence. Once the kids were in bed, Drye and Hastings would head out to Hastings’ home studio, The Grapevine, to play some music. Ocean State is the result.
