New York Voices: A Day Like This

Si dirà: tutta colpa dei Manhattan Transfer se in giro ci sono ancora gruppi di vocalese pronti a cantarcele a cappella o a dialogare con quello o quell’altro genere che sia pop, rock, jazz o bossa. Vizietti per solo voci, acrobazie e armonizzazioni lisce come il velluto e piene di quelle atmosfere radical chic che non guastano mai.

Tutto sembra già sentito, già vissuto e non rimarrebbe molto da aggiungere, tranne che il quartetto newyorkese rimane legato alla tradizione più nobile, quella che ha portato la band newyorkese a vincere un Grammy Award come vocal ensemble, ed ad essere una formazione riconosciuta e stimata nel panorama jazz, sulla a scia della migliore tradizione (Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Singers Unlimited, Manhattan Transfer, Take 6).

Ecco perché non dovremmo aspettarci molto da questo loro ultimo CD, tranne una sana professionalità. Niente di nuovo, dunque, in A Day Like This (titolo azzeccato). All’ascolto di cover e standard si rimane fermi senza sussulti (“In the Wee Smell Hours of the Morning”, “Don’t You Worry ‘bout a Thing”), e il rincorrersi e gli impasti delle voci ammaliano le orecchie; sono come delle benvenute ciabatte per i nostri stanchi arti a fine giornata. Nulla da dire, tutto maledettamente a posto, forse un po’ zuccherino. Ma tant’è.

E poi anche qualche guest star che non guasta mai (Bob Mintzer nell’iniziale “Darn That Dream” aggiunge, col clarone, il “sale” giusto; Chuck Loeb nel classico di Stevie Wonder non è da meno).

Una produzione che non vi cambierà la giornata. Al meglio sarà come un sorriso inaspettato (“The World Keeps You Waiting”). E, a volte, può anche essere tutto.
