Ryan Kisor: The Usual Suspects

Currently Ryan Kisor is a member of the famed Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and he also spent time with the Mingus Big Band. Although this young trumpeter recorded two decent albums for Columbia in the early-90s, Minor Mutiny and On The One, that failed in the marketplace, they did demonstrate much potential for the future. If there is any justice in the jazz world, The Usual Suspects should bring Kisor the kind of attention paid to current trumpet favs Wynton Marsalis, Nicholas Payton and Roy Hargrove. This varied session is reminiscent of the glory days of Blue Note in the 50s. Indeed, Kisor's prodigious chops, lyricism and fluid phrasing recall the best of bop-legends Clifford Brown and Lee Morgan. Ryan and his rhythm section, Peter Zak (piano), John Webber (bass) and Willie Jones III (drums), burn on the original, up tempo title track and display quiet beauty on the lovely Sheeryn's Waltz and the classic I've Never Been In Love Before. Here's hoping for more soon from this rising star.
