Yvonnick Prene

Born in Paris, he began as a guitarist, later switching to the diatonic harmonica, and eventually settling on the chromatic harmonica as his primary instrument. He first began playing the harmonica professionally in Parisian clubs at 17, then started his studies at Sorbonne University, from which he received a master's degree in music (2011). While still enrolled at the Sorbonne, Prené relocated to New York City and was awarded multiple full-tuition scholarships at The City College of New York, (MICEFA, 2007), Columbia University (Alliance Program, 2008) and at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music (Merit-Based Scholarship, 2009) where he had the opportunity to study with Lee Konitz and Reggie Workman among others

Scott Tixier: Cosmic Adventure

Read "Cosmic Adventure" reviewed by Luca Muchetti

The Big Beat: Edwin G. Hamilton, Scott Neumann, Donald Edwards, Arthur Vint, Rob Garcia, Jeremy Warren

This is a spotlight on drums...a pretty big spotlight. Edwin G. Hamilton The Whole World Must Change Self Produced2016 It's hard enough to find a drummer, much less one who sings. There is Les DeMerle, and he is fine, but, the drummer/singer is a pretty hard chair to fill, ...

Lorin Cohen: Home

Read "Home" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Yvonnick Prene: Breathe

Read "Breathe" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Yvonnick Prene has called New York home since 2007, but jazz fans in and around the Big Apple and beyond can be forgiven if they lacked awareness about his harmonica skills until more recent times. His first album--the inviting Jour de Fête (SteepleChase Records, 2013)--took a while to arrive, so the only way to learn about ...

Lorin Cohen: Home

Read "Home" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

What's “home?" Is it where somebody's born and raised? Is it where a person resides at a given time? Or is it any place where an individual finds a high level of comfort, joy, and possibility? For Lorin Cohen, it's all three. This talented bassist-composer makes that fact plainly apparent on this, his leader debut.

Yvonnick Prene and Pasquale Grasso: Merci Toots

Read "Merci Toots" reviewed by Chris Mosey

It is often said--rather nastily--that nobody can name five famous Belgians. Jazz fans can certainly name one: harmonicist Toots Thielemans. Thielemans, who in 2014 announced his retirement at the age of 92, decamped from his homeland after the war to play with just about everyone in the US, including Charlie Parker and--primarily--George Shearing. ...
