X Ensemble

The X Ensemble is a contemporary chamber ensemble performing works of living composers as well as Modern Jazz arrangements of classic works (such as the Beethoven Emperor Concerto.) Their debut performance took place on October 15th 2016 at The Ritz Theater in Newburgh NY to a sold out crowd. For that performance the ensemble consisted of 10 pieces – a “double quartet?: a Jazz Quartet (feat. Sax/piano/bass/drums) and a String Quartet, augmented by a percussionist (Marimba, hand percussion) and an additional wind player (flutes, penny whistle). Musicians included Violinist Fung Chern Hwei (from the Sirius Quartet), cellist Daniel Blair, bassist Peter Brendler, and percussionist Mark Frankel (Blue Man Group). We also included a spoken word component, featuring local poet extraordinaire Mona Toscano.?

Anthony Rodriguez ARodReeds

Born: June, 1991

Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Anthony Rodriguez has been making music since he was 16, when he first picked up the saxophone and began his classical training. Early on, he performed with the ISO Symphonic Band and Orchestra at venues like Carnegie Hall and Symphony Space, and later represented Xaverian High School internationally as lead Alto Saxophonist at the 2007 Cherry Blossom Festival in Kyoto, Japan.

Anthony’s path has always blended classical roots with versatility. After high school, he studied Music Performance at Brooklyn College, learning from respected mentors Bernard Goldberg (Flute), Edino Biaggi (Oboe), and Paul Cohen (Saxophone). Along the way, he spent several summers at French Woods Festival, performing in concert bands, symphony, and up to a dozen musicals each season—eventually joining the woodwind staff.

Van Dam and the Madman

A collaboration between multi-reedists Erik Van Dam and Albano the Madman showcasing the vast palette of sounds and textures at their disposal; using improvisation as a medium to convey complex storytelling and deep seated emotional depth.

Ari Kohn

Ari Kohn is a Multi-Instrumentalist, Composer, and Educator raised in Portland, OR, and shaped by the vibrant music scene in New Orleans, LA. Holding a degree in Jazz Studies from Tulane University, Ari specializes in Saxophone, Flute, and Vocals, with a bold, warm sound all his own.  As a sideman, he is currently a member of "J & The Causeways", and has been a part of myriad local groups such as "Miss Mojo", "Noruz", and "Sexual Thunder!", to name a few. He also leads soul-brass quintet "Brass Lightning," and recently released a solo project- "ARIEL".

Albano the Madman

Born: July 5, 1982

So this is the part where ::insert famous instrument company or famous musician:: is gonna slog through some paint by numbers B.S. about where I went to school and who I studied with...and we all have to pretend like it still matters in 2025 (or really, ever?)

John Patrick Douglas

Born: September 11, 1966

I play saxophone, clarinet, and flute. I play various genres - jazz, big band, funk/rock/pop, Brazilian, and others.

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, studied with Ben Meltzer and Mary Fettig. I'm currently teaching music in public schools, taking woodwind students in my private studio, and working as a freelance musician around the Bay Area. I've recorded on projects with Marcie Brown, Carrie Lyn Souza, and on True Vibes Records.

Melissa Pipe

Melissa Pipe is a baritone saxophonist, bassoonist, composer and arranger who lives in Montreal. 

As well as leading her own quintet and sextet, she performs regularly with jazz, hip hop, indie, and classical ensembles as a freelancer. A versatile player and writer, she has written for small group, chamber ensemble, big band and symphony orchestra.

Carl Cornwell

Born: April 5, 1950

With a 40 year career that’s included stints with Roy Haynes and Pharoah Sanders—not to mention co-founding Amnesia Express with Gil Scott-Heron—Carl Cornwell is a veteran saxophonist still performing high energy post-bop contemporary jazz with blues and latin influences.

Known in the '90s for his compositions & performances with progressive jazz ensemble UNIT CIRCLE, he has been the featured saxophonist with the Washington DC based Project Natale since 2002 and is now touring his own quartet at festivals and clubs around the mid-Atlantic corridor and beyond.

In addition to his small ensemble work, Carl has appeared as lead alto-saxophonist with the Bay Side Big Band and the Eubie Blake Jazz Institute Orchestra (Baltimore, MD) .

Karlton E Hester

Born: 1949

Karlton E. Hester, Ph.D. (composer/flutist/saxophonist), began his career as a composer and recording artist in Los Angeles where he worked as a studio musician and music educator. He received his Ph.D. in composition from the City University of New York Graduate Center and is currently Director of "Jazz" Studies at the University of California in Santa Cruz. As performer on both flute and saxophone, he is music director of the Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band and Hesterian Musicism. Hester is currently music director of Hesterian Musicism, founding director of the Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band in San Francisco and served as the Herbert Gussman Director of Jazz Studies at Cornell University from 1991-2001

Alexa Tarantino

Born: May 30, 1992

Alexa Tarantino is an award-winning, vibrant, young jazz saxophonist, woodwind doubler, composer, and educator. Alexa’s “lovely, ardent way of improvising,” and “sharply plotted but gracefully unencumbered straight-ahead jazz [compositions]” (Giovanni Russonello, The New York Times) establish her individual voice which shines through as a dynamic performer and educator. Tarantino was recently named one of the “Top 5 Alto Saxophonists of 2019” by the JazzTimes Critics’ Poll. Her debut album, Winds of Change, peaked at #15 on the JazzWeek Charts and landed at #79 for JazzWeek’s Top 100 records of 2019. Tarantino’s performance highlights include prestigious venues such as Jazz in Marciac Festival (with Wynton Marsalis and the Young Stars of Jazz), Umbria Jazz Festival (with Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project), the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the Hollywood Bowl (with Sherrie Maricle & the DIVA Jazz Orchestra), the Rockport Jazz Festival (Alexa Tarantino Quintet), Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts (with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra), and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (with LSAT, Earth, Wind & Fire and others)
